CH Max de Veeweyde
Max was one of F Isobel Ormiston's imports from Belguim.
He was imported in1925, when he was 9 months old. When Ms. Ormiston went over
to Belgium to get him, he was almost lost when a page boy in a restaurant opened the room
they were in. Luckily, with the help of some foot soldiers, Max was found.
Max was considered one of Isobel Ormiston's orginal imported pair, though his
"wife" Flore de Veeweyde, was in this country a year before he. Together
they produced Marouf, who was the sire of Maroufke - who
may have been the finest dog that Isobel Ormiston ever produced, and he had a profound
effect on the breed in this country. Both Max and Flore are also found on the
mother's side of Maroufke's pedigree, so they can certainly take a lion's share of the
credit in his production.
Max died in March of 1939, almost 15 years old.
Of him, Isobel Ormiston wrote, "In Brussels there is a Cafe named 'Chez Max de
Veeweyde". I have never been able to determine whether it was named for Max, as
seems probable, or he for it! Yet it is certain that he was named for the
distinguished Burgomaster Max, of Brussels. Max frequently recieved letters from dog
food companies saying 'Mr. de Veeweyde we can show you how to feed your dogs
cheaper," but he wasn't interested in feeding dogs. He and Flore were the
first Schipperkes I knew, and they won me to the breed forever."
Indeed, Isobel Ormiston remained incredibly active in the breed until her death in 1954.
