Where can I find a Tervuren? ~ We can help with that. We can direct you to rescue, or we can help you find a reputable breeder in your area. What is a reputable breeder? Someone who will automatically give you a pedigree with your puppy, as well as a puppy packet (food, health & shot record), they will show you the mother, and where she stays, gladly. Dont be impressed when someone tells you they can show you both parents right in their home - that could just mean they used the most convenient male - NOT THE BEST ONE. They should show, or compete in obedience, (or BOTH!) and should be members of a breed club. They should be able to talk to you about the dogs pedigree - and know something about the dogs on it. They will be able to tell you what health problems the breed encounters often, and what health tests they have done for their breeding stock. You would probably pay a similar price if you went to back yard breeder or to a quality breeder, and you would pay more if you went to a pet shop. SO WHY NOT GET THE BEST PUPPY WITH THE BEST GUARANTEES FOR YOUR MONEY??? Problems to watch for in the breed: Epilepsy is the biggest problem facing tervs today. If you go back far enough, you will find it in every line. Make sure your breeder knows their lines, and to be safe, talk to several breeders. If you do not think a breeder is being honest with you, go somewhere else. What's a big sign? Someone who says "Don't worry about epilepsy, my dogs' lines are clear." Other problems may include PRA, cataracts, hip dysplasia, and possibly thyroid. Both parents should have had their hips checked (OFA), elbows, and eyes checked (CERF). The puppies' grandparents should have been checked as well, so you can also ask for their OFA and CERF numbers. Here are some websites that might help you...
