Antique Schipperke Photographs

Many of the earliest "pictures" that we have of the Schipperke breed are lithographs or etching, sometimes they are paintings or drawings as well.  However, the Schipperke began its new life as an official breed - and began recording its history - when photosgraphs were available.  It is hard to say how familiar the people were who took these pictures of these early dogs with photography, and certainly taking a photograph of a dog was new.  Most of these Schipperkes pictured would not be competitive today - however, some of them might well have been with the angle of the camera just a bit off, or capturing them at an "off" moment.  Whether they are or not, they are a very important part of the recorded history of this breed.

Binchou de la Bouche of Schippland.jpg (61912 bytes) This is Binchou de la Bouche.  He was from a famous Belgian sire who was French bred, and was imported to England as a puppy.  Some of his puppies were exported to South Africa, and others were very influential in England.
Poilu.jpg (78656 bytes) This is Belg CH Poilu.  This dog had a very great effect on the lines in America, as all of the dogs that can be traced as being imported by Isobel Ormiston went back to this dog, save only one.
Dolette de Veeweyde full photo.jpg (52695 bytes) This is a picture of Belg CH Dolette de Veeweyde as she made her journey to America - the little girl was an admirer.  Dolette died after only a month being in this country, but she left behind tiny babies - two of which grew up to have a very great effect on the Schipperke breed in the US.
Minette of Kelso.jpg (23283 bytes) This is CH Minette of Kelso.  This picture is important for several reasons.  First, experts in Belgium felt that this was an ideal Schipperke silhouette.  Because of this, this picture appeared on some of their official certificates.  The head silhouette was also used by Isobel Ormiston to head her Breeder's Columns in the AKC Gazette.
Flup de Veeweyde of Kelso.jpg (50924 bytes) This is CH Flup de la Veeweyde, one of the dogs that Isobel Ormiston imported.
Schip dog food ad.jpg (24795 bytes) This Schipperke appeared in an ad for dog food - little else is presently known about the picture.
1905_Schipperkes_on_Postcard_GB.jpg (8822 bytes) The is an old postcard and English in origin.
1931_AKC_Gazette_Cover.jpg (79195 bytes) This was the cover of an AKC Gazette in 1931.  The Schipperke pictured is CH Reine Margot of Kelso, who was about 2 years old at the time.  She died not much later without producing get - her sibling, however, CH Ti Noir of Kelso, is found behind almost every Schipperke in the US today.
