Antique Schipperke Medals

Schipperkes trace their history back several hundred years; however, the first date that we have a positive identification of the breed is in 1690.  They had perhaps the world's first dog show - but not for the dog's, for their collars.  We have sought a picture of one of these collars, but so far are unsuccessful.  Since that point in time, Schipperkes were invited to show in the 1860's, but failed to make even a single entry.  In the 1880, fanciers got together and promoted the breed more heavily, and they began to be shown.  We have some pictures of a few of the awards that were given at these shows, and hope to obtain more as time goes by.  One of our members even owns one of these metals!

Shown here is a gold and silver version of a pin that was most likely given out as an award at one of the early dog shows.  It pictures, in order, a Papillion, a Brussels Griffon, and a Schipperke.

This is a medal, rather than a pin, that was most likely awarded at the early shows.  One Schipperke gold medal went up on ebay for over $100, and a bronze, or third place, was also sold on ebay.  Many of these early medals are dated, and also show class won.

medalschipperkedoregold.jpg (7340 bytes) This is another medal created for the Schipperke.  Many of these medals have smooth backs with little to tell us where they came from or what they were used for.  Likely they were awards, as we have seen both gold and silver versions, and possibility a bronze.

bronze_medal_schip_1888_front.jpg (8688 bytes) Less is known of this medal then any of the earlier mentioned.  It was sold on ebay and was listed as "found on the ground".  The date for it is also unknown, for it says "founded in 1888", which might be an actual date for the medal, or just when the Royal Schipperkes Club was founded.

This was another medal sold on ebay.  They have a large breed Belgian dog in the back (I forget which breed) and next to them a Belgian Shepherd dog.  In the corner, the ebay seller listed that "perhaps it was a cat".  I, of course, recognized it for what it was - a Schipperke!  The uses and origin of this medal are unknown.

I believe that the first medal on the top (first front, then back shown), was a commemorative type medal done for military dogs. In the top right corner a Belgian Shepherd is shown, at the bottom first a Brussels Griffon and then a Schipperke in the very corner.  The medal listed below was also one sold on ebay, and it is similar in most of its details to the top one, but this one was made in 1992.

This link below is to a website that shows many early dog medals which were created in early Belgium, and most of the medals shown here appear there.  The last medal does not.

Here is an example of a modern medal won by Marj Kuyt of Roetmop Schipperkes.  It was sent in by HSS member Koreen Nadon.
