Comments by HSS member Jean-Marie Vanbutsele:

The picture representing "Bella" was published in the magazine "Chasse et Pêche" on 27 januari 1889. Belonging to M. de Middeleer, Bella is the son of "Spitz A" (belonging to Benoît Terclaevers) and "Miss" (belonging to M. L. Behaeghel).  Louis Vander Snickt did the painting on basis of a photography.  IMPORTANT is the text published at the same time with the picture.  It is in french and my english is to weak to do a translation.

Our best translation so far:
We have published this portrait according to a photograph to draw the attention to different catacteres (characteristics?) from the race of which it does not have ete (summer??) not held account in the engravings published in England and America.  Initially the tete (head) and the eyes which are oval, the legs of front which are right like those of the cat and especially the hair which is hard, long and smooth like that of the roe-deer.  This hair forms criniere (ruff) around the neck until on the back;  on the body it appears close-cropped, but in reality rather long, that is seen with the folds on the front of the thigh.  We would have liked to present a schipperke upright, in order to show the hairs lengthening-pieces of the breeches, but it is impossible for these small demons to be held one moment motionless.
